    Medical and Veterinary Society Dinner

    The dinner will be proceeded by a Girton150 Medics Symposium and our guest speaker in the evening will be Chris Proudman (Veterinary Sciences, 1982), Professor and Head of School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Surrey.     We are proud to present five public lectures to mark 150 years of scholarship at Girton. The Visitor’s Lecture is delivered by The Right Honourable,The Baroness Hale of Richmond (1963, Law), President of the UK Supreme Court, Visitor to Girton College since 2004 and Honorary President of the Cambridge University Law Society.

    Her Lecture is titled “100 Years of Women in Law”.

    5.45pm for 6.00pm start. All are welcome but places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.

    Classical Society Event

    Girton College is delighted to invite all those who studied Classics to a Classics Event for alumni and current students on the afternoon of Saturday 11 May 2019. The event will begin with a drinks reception at 12 noon in the Stanley Library followed by a short talk by former Director of Studies in Classics and current Life Fellow, Dr Dorothy Thompson, at 12.30pm. Guests will then be invited to the Old Hall for a buffet lunch. Following lunch the current Director of Studies in Classics, Dr Helen Van Noorden will introduce a panel of three alumni who will discuss useful aspects of their Classics degree.     The Founders’ Enterprise Lecture by Herman Narula

The fourth one, the Founders’ Enterprise Lecture is presented by Herman Narula co-founder in 2012, and CEO, of Improbable, a British multinational technology company. Herman Narula (2007, Computer Science) has established himself among Girton’s most distinguished and successful business leaders.

    His Lecture is titled “Virtual Worlds: The Next Great Wilderness”.

    Girton150 Celebration in Dublin

    You are warmly invited to join the Mistress, Professor Susan J. Smith, on Saturday 18 May 2019 at a reception to celebrate the College’s 150th Anniversary at Trinity College Dublin.

    Girton renews its historic link with Trinity College, Dublin, which welcomed the ‘Steamboat Ladies’ from 1904-07. Lunch will be held in Trinity College’s prestigious 1592 Room, preceded by a tour of the Old Library, home to the Book of Kells. Dr Hazel Mills, College Historian, will speak about Girton’s Irish connections and the ‘Steamboat Ladies’ – the women who travelled to Dublin to receive their University degrees in less enlightened times.

    The event is open to Girtonians, family and friends and there is an optional pre-drinks tour of the Old Library and Book of Kells at 11am. Reception drinks begin at 12 noon followed by lunch at 12.30pm. The dress code for the event is smart casual.

    Tickets are £30 per person and the ticket price includes admission to the reception, drinks and lunch. It is also possible to book tickets for the Book of Kells Exhibition which starts at 11am prior to the drinks reception. Tickets for the exhibition are £10 per person.

    Girton150 Celebration in Edinburgh

    You are warmly invited to join the Mistress, Professor Susan J. Smith, on Sunday 19 May 2019 at a reception and lunch to celebrate the College’s 150th Anniversary at the Edinburgh Royal College of Physicians.

    This event is open to Girtonians, family and friends to join members of the College for drinks and a buffet lunch in the beautiful Old Library.  Our speaker for this occasion will be alumna Professor Wendy Savage (1953 Natural Sciences) advocate and campaigner for women’s rights in childbirth and fertility. She has recently been given the prestigious BMJ Award for ‘Outstanding Contribution to Health and Healthcare in the UK’

    The event will start with reception drinks at 12 noon followed by a buffet lunch at 12.45pm. The dress code for the event is smart casual.

    Pilkington Prize Awards for Teaching Excellence

    This event is by invitation only. The Ceremony is being hosted at Girton in recognition of the 150 anniversary of the founding of the College. The prizes are awarded to individuals who make a substantial contribution to the teaching programme of a Department, Faculty or the University as a whole. There are twelve prizes awarded each year, with nominations made by each School. The prizes are awarded annually by the Vice-Chancellor.

The evening’s entertainment features The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama Brass Band, close up magic and comedians including Dr Phil Hammond.

    Highlights of our packed programme on Saturday include lectures and discussions with Dr Rowan Williams, Professor Martin Rees, Professor Caroline Humphrey, Daphne Todd, Dr Ingrid Pollard, Martin Rowson, Dr Phil Hammond, Lady Hale, Lady Arden, Dame Rosalyn Higgins, Professor Marilyn Strathern and Professor Stephen Toope, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge. Dame Karen Pierce will give the Anniversary Lecture. Learn about the early History of the College with Dr Hazel Mills and investigate the groundbreaking research of today’s Girton Fellowship.

    Guided (and self-guided tours) of the buildings, historic gardens, orchard and the People’s Portraits Collection enable you to explore the College. Six members of Girton’s internationally renowned Music staff – Martin Ennis, Margaret Faultless, Andrew Kennedy, Nicholas Mulroy, Jeremy West and Gareth Wilson – will combine forces in a special early-music concert. Students, alumni, staff and Fellows will compete in Girton’s answer to University Challenge (hosted by Dr Margaret Mountford).

    An outdoor performance of Blue Stockings, a light show extravaganza and a concert will ensure the celebrations continue late into the evening.

    A variety of food choices will be available to purchase throughout the day, with the Anniversary Formal Hall (Sold Out) and a Supper Club with Provenance Kitchen and live music (pre-booked only) as our evening dining options.

    Our series of talks and discussions continues with lectures by Professor John Eatwell, Dr Clive Oppenheimer, Professor Peter Abrahams, Dr Fiona Cooke and Professor Andrew Wallace-Hadrill. Meet Girtonian authors Dr Julia Golding and Christina Koning. Experience the music of the Victorian era with a 19th century Parlour Music Concert and with Queen Victoria’s Consort. Follow in the footsteps of Girtonians in the 20s and 30s and try your hand at tea dancing in the Hall.

    We look forward to welcoming your children and grandchildren to help us celebrate this very special anniversary. Experience retro computer games with the Centre for Computing History, discover suffragette Jiu Jitsu and learn to ride a Penny Farthing. Join the turn of the century Girton fire brigade and become a suffragist. Be inspired by the Cambridge alumnae banner and work with artists to create your own and join our march through time. Family friendly activities also include a treasure hunt, zorbing, archery and birds of prey.

    End the day at our very special Girton150 Birthday Afternoon Tea (included in the ticket price).

    You are warmly invited to join The Mistress, Professor Susan J. Smith, on Thursday 21 November 2019 at a reception and concert to celebrate the College’s 150th Anniversary at The Honourable Society of Gray’s Inn.

    The event is open to Girtonians, friends and family to join members of the College for drinks and bowl food in the Large Pension Room, followed by a music recital in The Hall.  Performers will include past winners of the London Girtonian Association Music Prize and they will be directed by Girton’s Director of Music, Dr Martin Ennis.

    The event will start at 6.30pm and the dress code is lounge suit. Tickets are £35  per person and the ticket price includes admission to the reception, drinks and bowl food, and admission to the recital.
