    The Founders’ Memorial Lecture by HIH Princess Takamado

    To present the 58th Founders’ Memorial Lecture we are honoured to welcome Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado who studied Chinese and then archaeology and anthropology at Girton 1972-5. A particularly active member of the Imperial Family of Japan, Princess Takamado, in addition to her public duties, has long been a visiting professor at the Osaka University of Arts. She, together with the late Prince, is a renowned collector and expert on “netsuke” and part of their large collection is housed in the Tokyo National Museum.

    Her Lecture is titled “Netsuke and Their Role in Introducing Japan to the West”.

    Launch of the Lawrence Room Collections Book

    The Founders’ Science Lecture by Professor Dame Pratibha Gai

    We are proud to present five public lectures to mark 150 years of scholarship at Girton. The Founders Science Lecture is presented by Dame Professor Pratibha Gai FREng, FRS. Chair of Electron Microscopy and Founding Co Director at The York JEOL Nanocentre, she is one of Britain’s best known physicists and the first to create a microscope capable of perceiving chemical reactions at the atomic scale. Reflecting something of her Girton heritage, she has not patented that machine, to ensure that its scientific potential is realised to the full. Her Lecture is on

    Her Lecture is titled “Atoms in Action”.

    Girton150 Celebration in Birmingham

    Girton150 Regional UK

    An evening in the splendid Round Room at Birmingham City Museum and Art Gallery. Open to Girtonians, family and friends to join members of the College for drinks and canapés. Guests will have exclusive access to the Pre-Raphaelite Galleries and The Staffordshire Hoard. A special introduction to the Staffordshire Hoard will be given by Girtonian Dr Tim Pestell (1987, Anglo-Saxon Norse and Celtic), Curator at Norwich Museum. Tim was a member of the team which valued this extraordinary find.

    An evening in the glorious Tiled Hall at the newly refurbished Leeds City Art Gallery. A rare opportunity to see the Leonardo Da Vinci drawings from the Royal Collection and to hear our own Professor Peter Abrahams (2011) give his fascinating talk on Leonardo’s work.     The Founders’ Enterprise Lecture by Herman Narula

The fourth one, the Founders’ Enterprise Lecture is presented by Herman Narula co-founder in 2012, and CEO, of Improbable, a British multinational technology company. Herman Narula (2007, Computer Science) has established himself among Girton’s most distinguished and successful business leaders.

    His Lecture is titled “Virtual Worlds: The Next Great Wilderness”.

    Girton150 Celebration in Dublin

    Girton renews its historic link with Trinity College, Dublin, which welcomed the ‘Steamboat Ladies’ from 1904-07. Lunch will be held in Trinity College’s prestigious 1592 Room, preceded by a tour of the Old Library, home to the Book of Kells. Dr Hazel Mills (2014)(TBC) will speak about Girton’s ‘Steamboat Ladies’ – the women who travelled to Dublin to receive their University degrees in less enlightened times. Open to Girtonians, family and friends.

    Pilkington Prize Awards for Teaching Excellence

    This event is by invitation only. The Ceremony is being hosted at Girton in recognition of the 150 anniversary of the founding of the College. The prizes are awarded to individuals who make a substantial contribution to the teaching programme of a Department, Faculty or the University as a whole. There are twelve prizes awarded each year, with nominations made by each School. The prizes are awarded annually by the Vice-Chancellor.

    The College looks forward to welcoming back alumni and their guests for a weekend of fun and intellectual stimulation. The Girton150 Festival starts at 5pm with a drinks reception before the Opening Ceremony with guest of honour, The Rt Hon Baroness Hale of Richmond (1963, Law), the College Visitor and President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. After the ceremony, there will be a jazz and brass concert by the Brass Band of the Royal Welsh School of Music followed by a BBQ enlivened by performances from magician Tony Rix from Magic Unlimited and comedians including Dr Phil Hammond (1981 Medical Sciences). The evening will continue with more live music – dancing optional – and the College bar will stay open until late for further festivities.

    Saturday’s programme during the day will be full and exciting with three or four events to choose from in each time slot. Our speakers will come from the various worlds of media, politics, academia and sport – to mention but a few!
    Recent confirmed speakers include:

    Lord Rees of Ludlow (Martin Rees), will talk about his new book The Future.

    • The Final 150th Anniversary lecture will be given by Dame Karen Pierce (1978, English) Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the UK to the UN in New York.

    • A UK Higher Education Panel Discussion towards Brexit with Professor Stephen Toope, vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, and Professor Madeleine Atkins (1971, Law).

    Jessica Swale, author of Blue Stockings, will introduce us to her play which will be performed live in its original Girton setting.

    Lord Williams of Oystermouth (Rowan Williams) will lead a panel discussion on Religion and Equality.

    A musical concert featuring well-known international artists in early music
    Further activities and attractions on the Saturday include more lectures, panel discussions, Poetry readings, Girton Tales – glimpses behind the scenes, (self) guided tours around the College and re-enactments of the College history.

    As well as continuing the anniversary programme of lectures, discussions and tours for alumni, Girton will welcome families and local residents to enjoy family friendly activities such as sporting events, master classes, and storytelling. Everyone will then come together for the formal reopening of Honeysuckle Walk over afternoon tea and the closing ceremony.
    Highlights of the Sunday include a Lecture on suffragette posters and the University Library exhibition, a panel discussion hosted by Professor Dame Marilyn Strathern (1960, Archaeology and Anthropology and Former Mistress) and a lecture on Professor Joan Robinson (1922, Economics) by Lord John Eatwell, President of Queens’ College, Cambridge.
    Further activities and attractions on Sunday include a music concert, tea dances, re-enactments of the College history, Penny Farthing bike riding, book and poetry readings.
